Sonia Math Day Planned for High School Students on March 22

“Defying Gravity (And Logic)” is the theme of this year’s Sonia Math Day campus event that encourages high school students, who are currently enrolled in a math class, to explore their interests in math and problem solving.
High school girls can take flight with their mathematics interests in a free day of activities celebrating Sonia Math Day on Saturday, March 22, hosted by the Department of Mathematics and the college's student chapter of the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM).
Activities are planned from 9 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. in classrooms within the Olin Advanced Learning Center in the middle of campus. The event is open to all students who have taken or are currently enrolled in a high school mathematics course. All Sonia Math Day participants will receive lunch and an event T-shirt, if they register by Monday, March 17.
More information about Sonia Math Day and registration can be found at www.rose-hulman.edu/soniamath.
This year's event theme is "Defying Gravity (And Logic)" and will honor Sonia Kovalevsky, the first woman in Europe to earn a doctorate in mathematics, whose pioneering contributions changed the field for good. Sonia Kovalevsky Days have been held at colleges and universities for over 20 years to celebrate her legacy.
Rose-Hulman mathematics professors and student math majors will lead girls in fun-filled events, with topics ranging from probability and statistics in games to Tie Dye InteriArt. Faculty and AWM student members will also host discussions and campus tours to show students that their futures in mathematics are unlimited.
Parents and students with questions about the event can contact Associate Professor of Mathematics Tracy Weyand, PhD, at weyand@rose-hulman.edu or reach out to the Department of Mathematics at 812-877-8302.
