Mechanical Engineering Department Recognizes Outstanding Students
The Department of Mechanical Engineering recognized students for their academic achievements, along with their involvement on competition teams, campus leadership, athletics, and enhancing the rich and diverse culture within the department during the 2023-24 school year.
The following awards were presented at the department’s Honors and Award Ceremony:
Cummins Inc. Most Outstanding Senior Award — Sam Betts
Betts has spent countless hours improving not only the Mechanical Engineering (ME) Department, but also the entire Rose campus. She is a tour guide, active in orchestra, helped launch the Rose Rocketry and Cube Satellite Design teams, as well as being an excellent student academically.
Dr. Robert Seinhauser Most Outstanding Junior Award and Edward A. MacLean Award — Hannah Ponstine
Ponstine was honored for her outstanding academic performance and campus leadership. She has retained a perfect 4.0 GPA, been active in robotics research and the Robotics competition team. She is also a member of the Student Activities Board (SAB) and Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, among many other extra-curricular activities.
Most Outstanding Sophomore Student Award — Will Geoghegan
Geoghegan has taken classes at the junior level as a sophomore, and regularly shows creativity and technical acumen in his assignments. He is involved with research of gridded-ion thrusters and has made significant contributions to the first published conference paper by that research group. Geoghegan is a member of the Mechanical Engineering Student Advisory Board (MESAB) and runs for the cross country and track teams.
Most Outstanding First-Year Student Award — Hannah Flewelling
Flewelling is a Noblitt Scholar, participates in several service opportunities and is an active member of SAB and Intervarsity Christian Fellowship. She also works at Hatfield Hall, as an usher and front desk assistant.
Senior Leadership Award — Sam Betts and Ayden Ayres
Ayres has been a leader in the MESAB for the past two years. His leadership is responsible for many activities that have promoted a positive ME culture on campus. Over his time as co-chair, there has been a nearly 50 percent increase in event attendance over previous years. Ayres was treasurer for the Ski and Snowboarding Club, an AskRose Homework Help tutor and played on the Rose football team.
