William Hawkins

Meet William

A mathematics and physics major who creates algorithms to solve Rubik's Cubes.

What do you most expect to gain from being part of our scholars program?

I hope to form connections with like-minded, motivated peers in order to further enhance my Rose-Hulman education. I am also looking forward to the opportunity to leverage this program for additional alumni connections both during and beyond my time at Rose.

How do you spend your free time?

Since my sophomore year in high school, I have spent a considerable amount of time swimming competitively. I balance the rest of my free time between spending time with friends and family and volunteering at a local food pantry.

What is the nerdiest thing you do?

I enjoy memorizing algorithms in order to solve a Rubik's cube as fast as possible.

How do you hope to change the world with the knowledge you’ll gain at Rose-Hulman?

I plan to use my Rose-Hulman education to tackle the issue of a lack of a foundational education for everyone. I believe the solution to the vast array of global problems we face today stems from the lack of accessible education worldwide. With my Rose-Hulman education, in addition to the alumni and peer connections I will form, I hope to explore the possibility of expanding educational opportunities.

How did you know Rose was right for you?

I have always thrived in a small, personal, and fast-paced learning environment. When I learned of Rose-Hulman's small class sizes, accessible professors, and quarter system which allows for advanced and accelerated learning, I knew it was the perfect place for me.
