Jobs and Responsibilities

General Job Requirements:

  • Provide excellent customer service by interacting with all SRC patrons and always being visible while working
  • Be knowledgeable of all campus facility areas
  • Supervise lobby/weight room and cardio area to ensure a safe and enjoyable recreational environment
  • Perform light housekeeping duties to ensure all areas are organized and in working order
  • Relay any pertinent information from each shift to supervisor
  • Prepare fields/courts when needed, including set up and take down
  • Assist with special event set-up and take down, as needed
  • Become certified in CPR, AED, and first aid
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Enforce SRC and Rose-Hulman rules and policies

General Staff

This is a part-time position. Primary responsibilities include greeting, welcoming, and ensuring the safety of all SRC patrons, while strictly enforcing the policies of the facility. You’ll have specific responsibilities within the facility and during special events throughout the year. General staff are required to participate and adequately pass all training activities pertinent to their position. This includes an initial training session, followed by seminars held throughout the year to certify in first aid/CPR and AED.

Front Desk Responsibilities:

  1. Greet all patrons of the facility as they enter, and say good bye as they leave
  2. Ensure only individuals with proper authorization enter the facility
  3. Answer phones and provide answers or directions to all calls
  4. Record data entries for building usage reports
  5. Provide prospective patrons with paperwork to obtain proper authorization for use of the facility
  6. Maintain records of court and equipment rentals
  7. Maintain inventory of rental equipment
  8. Supervise lobby/weight room area to ensure a safe and enjoyable recreational environment
  9. Be knowledgeable of all campus facility areas
  10. Be knowledgeable of opening procedures
  11. Perform light housekeeping duties to ensure all areas are organized and in working order
  12. Relay any pertinent information from each shift to supervisor
  13. Make sure the YMCA account is logged in before scanning a YMCA patron card 

Weight Room Responsibilities:

  1. Check equipment to ensure proper working order
  2. Ensure all patrons are wearing proper attire for safety purposes
  3. Replace any misplaced weights or dumbbells throughout shift
  4. Complete cleaning procedure checklist in weight room
  5. Contact the Building Supervisor to change the radio station or a channel on any TV

*The cleaning procedure checklist will be collected and kept at the building supervisor desk.

Lifeguard

A lifeguard is a part-time member of the SRC staff. This worker must be flexible, take pride in his/her work, and help maintain a safe, attractive facility with minimal supervision. Primary responsibilities for a lifeguard include ensuring swimmer safety by providing patron surveillance, responding to emergency situations with established methods and procedures, and enforcing rules and regulations regarding pool activities. 

Life guards have specific responsibilities within the pool area inspecting pool equipment. Lifeguards are required to participate and adequately pass all training activities pertinent to their position. This includes an initial training session, followed by seminars held throughout the year to certify in lifeguard, first aid/CPR and AED.

Lifeguard Responsibilities:

  1. Prepare pool for practices (lane lines, diving boards, water polo nets, etc.) when needed
  2. Inspect drains to ensure clear
  3. Check to ensure all signs are posted and secure
  4. Put up “Pool Closed” signs when appropriate
  5. Turn off lights at end of shift
  6. Record data of number of patrons each day
  7. Monitor all activities in the pool/diving area
  8. Maintain proper safety conditions. Place all loose items on the deck in the pool storage room

Building Supervisor

Building supervisors must be capable of performing all of the positions within the Sports and Recreation Center. Building supervisors must be available to work various shifts and must have first aid/CPR certifications, and be AED certified. Building supervisors must be outgoing, honest, and highly dependable and have good communication skills in order to properly perform the duties of the position.

Building Supervisor Responsibilities:

The specific expectations and responsibilities for a building supervisor are listed below:

  1. Perform all opening and closing procedures that are relevant to your shift
  2. Check all areas to make sure the workers that are scheduled to work are present at the appropriate workstation and at the appropriate time. If any worker who is scheduled to work does not show up for a scheduled shift then he/she needs to be called
  3. Make sure all workstations have personnel before looking into any situations where individuals are absent
  4. Check the Sports and Recreation Center Master schedule for all of the venues to see what events are scheduled during your shift and that any set-ups needed are completed; if not finish whatever is necessary
  5. Make rounds every 30 minutes. On these rounds you should be looking for the following:
  • All doors are secure
  • All workers are in place and have arrived for their shift on time
  • ALL WORK AREAS ARE CLEAN AND NEAT
  • All scheduled events are taking place where and when they are scheduled (according to the master schedule)
  • All workers are wearing their SRC shirt and have a neat appearance

Introduce yourself to all of the workers who are working during your shift. It is very important that they know who you are and how they can contact you if they need assistance.

Event Staff

An event staff worker is a part-time member of the SRC staff. Primary responsibilities for this worker include greeting and welcoming teams/guests and acting as a host, setting-up and taking down for events, working games/special events and ensuring the safety of all SRC patrons.

Employees have specific responsibilities within the SRC and athletic facilities during special events throughout the year. Event staff workers are required to participate and adequately pass all training activities pertinent to their position. This includes an initial training session, followed by seminars held throughout the year to certify in first aid/CPR and AED. 

Event staff workers must be available to work various special events and varsity competitions throughout the week and weekends. Work time will vary. Event staff must be outgoing, honest, and highly dependable, and have good communication skills in order to properly perform the duties of this position. Below is a list of the different varsity athletic events that the event staff will work and the positions they will be working throughout the year:

Seth Woodason

Director of Recreational Sports and Athletic Facilities, Seth Woodason has a total of more than nine years of experience at Rose-Hulman where he has advanced the institute's health and fitness priorities. While earning his master's degree in recreation and sports management at Indiana State University, Seth served as a graduate assistant at Rose before returning to campus full time in 2015. He earned his undergraduate degree from Harding University and also attended the University of Evansville and Gonzaga University.
