Fowler Academic Building
Opened in the Fall of 2021, Rose-Hulman's new 70,000 square foot Fowler Academic Building has design studios, flexible classrooms, state-of-the-art chemistry, biochemistry and food science labs, collaboration workspaces, and faculty innovation spaces, along with an atrium featuring artwork that reacts to changing conditions within the building.
A Window Into Rose
Opened in the Fall of 2021, Rose-Hulman's new Fowler Academic Building will have collaboration workspaces, design studios, flexible classrooms, chemistry laboratories and faculty innovation spaces.
Space to Collaborate
The new Fowler Academic Building has been designed to support active student engagement through flexible and easily adaptable spaces for student projects and design studios, and breakout space for students and teams to collaborate on projects.
WELL-Certified
The Fowler Academic Building is the first building on campus to meet new WELL-certified building standards for design interventions, operational protocols, and policies with a commitment to fostering a culture of health and wellness for all its inhabitants.
An Exciting New Space
While there have been many new developments on campus, including enhanced athletic facilities, the renovated Mussallem Union and addition of the Kremer Innovation Center, the new Fowler Academic Building is the first academic-centric building added to Rose-Hulman in nearly 25 years.
Multi- and Interdisciplinary Opportunities
The new Fowler Academic Building allows for multi- and interdisciplinary collaboration among students in different areas of study.

Each space in the Fowler Academic Building was designed with the specific intent of facilitating group work.
A Leader in Undergraduate STEM Education
With its new classrooms, laboratories, workspaces, and an interactive art exhibit that includes a programming component for students, the new Fowler Academic Building further enhances Rose as a leader in undergraduate science, engineering and mathematics education.
State-of-the-Art Labs
New chemistry, biochemistry and food science and engineering laboratories will allow students to get hands-on experience using state-of-the-art equipment used by professionals, as early as their first year.
Students Can Set the Mood
Rose-Hulman students will be able to program features of an artistic arrangement that includes more than 13,000 programable light-emitting diodes. The exhibit will showcase a multitude of colors every minute throughout each day, reflecting the ever-changing conditions within the building environment.
Depth of Field
Standing at 30 feet tall and 17 feet wide, the “Depth of Field” artistic exhibit will be the centerpiece of the central atrium inside the 70,000-square-foot building.

The New Design Lab
Professor Patsy Brackin, the Program Director for Engineering Design, talks about the Design Lab opening this fall as part of the campus’ new Fowler Academic Building. The Design Lab will have all the tools and materials engineering design students will use, as they get real-world experience developing prototypes for industry stakeholders and working with multidisciplinary senior design groups.
The New Chemistry and Biochemistry Laboratories
Rose Hulman Head of the Department of Chemistry Ross Weatherman shares an update on all the exciting hands-on opportunities students will get in the enhanced chemistry and biochemistry labs set to open with the new Fowler Academic Building in Fall 2021. Students will be using the same state-of-the-art equipment as professionals, such as a centralized vacuum pump and customizable gas delivery system, starting their first year. The connected space also allows for more interdisciplinary opportunities for undergraduate research.
The New Food Science and Engineering Laboratory
In Rose-Hulman’s new Food Science and Engineering Laboratory, students will learn science and engineering concepts about food, while also getting to eat and drink the results of their work in a way typical food science labs don’t allow! The lab will allow students to address important societal issues related to food production and distribution, sustainability and nutrition, as well as explore the scientific principals and engineering techniques used to create our favorite products like coffee, chocolate and more. Depth of Field Artwork
