Hosted by the Indiana Society of Professional Engineers and Rose-Hulman, the annual state championship brought together students from 34 schools across the state to compete for team and individual honors, along with the opportunity to represent Indiana at the National MATHCOUNTS Competition.
Following three rounds of challenging written competition, West Lafayette Jr./Sr. High School earned first-place team honors. Creekside Middle School of Carmel placed second, followed by Sycamore School of Indianapolis in third and Indy Homeschool in fourth.
Individually, Elias Qui of West Lafayette Jr./Sr. High School captured first-place honors, with teammate Roland Li finishing second. Sophia Chen of Davidson Academy Online placed third, and Roger Zhou of Discovery Middle School finished fourth. Teng-Wen Zhang, also of West Lafayette Jr./Sr. High School, rounded out the top five.
The top 16 students advanced to a fast-paced, head-to-head Countdown Round, where competitors raced to solve problems projected on a screen. Qui again claimed the top spot, with Zhou finishing second in the exciting final matchup.
Qui, Li, Chen, and Zhou will represent Indiana at the National MATHCOUNTS Competition on May 10 in Orlando, Florida, led by coach Lucas Harmon of West Lafayette Jr./Sr. High School.
Sponsored by Toyota Motor Corporation, the MATHCOUNTS Foundation, Tabco, and individual supporters, the competition is part of a national program designed to promote mathematics achievement and inspire interest in STEM careers among middle school students.
