Winnie Cheung brings tango to life as a classically trained pianist who also enjoys playing the bandoneon during her Tango with Winnie concerts. She will be making her third Discovery Music Series appearance at the White Chapel.

The first of two spring Discovery Music Series concerts will feature global musical styles with a special Tango with Winnie event on Sunday, March 30, at 5 p.m. in the White Chapel, featuring traditional and contemporary Argentinian tango music performed by pianist Winnie Cheung and a quartet of talented musicians. The concert is free and open to campus and the Terre Haute community.

This show complements a Musics of the Global course being taught this spring by Associate Professor of Music David Chapman, PhD. Students will complete a weeklong unit on music in South America and will discuss the origins and development of tango throughout the 20th century.

“This tango concert will take students’ learning beyond the classroom and bring the music they study to life,” said Chapman.

Cheung will be making her third Discovery Music Series performance. The Bloomington, Indiana-based pianist brings tango to life after studying piano with the most inspiring maestros of tango. She added bandoneon studies during the 2020 pandemic and now performs using the piano and bandoneon in each Tango with Winnie event.

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Cheung is a well-traveled global individual who performs annually in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and tangos everywhere she goes, including Antarctica. She has been the executive producer of the Tanguero Workshop in Urbana, Illinois, and participated in the Stowe Music Festival in Vermont and Tango for Musicians at Reed College in Oregon. Cheung earned master and doctorate degrees in music composition at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, and a bachelor’s degree at the University of Chicago.

The Humanities, Social Sciences and the Arts Department's Discovery Music Series, organized by Chapman, provides high-quality live music performances and uplifting musical experiences to the campus and Terre Haute community, and complements music courses taught in the department. The second series event on April 24 will feature Rose-Hulman students trained in a variety of music and dance styles from India.

Tickets are not required for any Discovery Series concert and seating in the White Chapel will be on a first-come, first-serve basis.
