Major: Biomathematics and Biomedical Engineering
Hometown: Columbus, Indiana

Manya Suresh has her sights set on the pharmaceutical industry, particularly genomics research, to make her impact on the world. Her biomathematics major provides a unique avenue of opportunity to attain her goal.

"I'm really interested in the application of computer science and mathematics to biology to study genetics," Suresh said.

In her first year at Rose-Hulman, Suresh is already earning interdisciplinary learning opportunities to grow in her field. As a Rose Research Fellow, Suresh is conducting paid research with a faculty member during her first two years at Rose-Hulman. Suresh works with Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Software Engineering and Biology Robert Williamson, PhD, on a project that uses SLiM software to model VDJ recombination in the genome.

"I'm simulating the process by which immune cells are made and I'm trying to see how different mathematical models affect this process to predict autoimmune disorders," she explained.

Suresh has succeeded outside of her academics as well, finding a home in several student organizations. She is a member of Chi Omega sorority and plays violin in the orchestra.

"As someone passionate about making change in our community, Rose has offered so many opportunities for me to get involved in service and outreach," she said, noting her newfound fondness for Chi Omega's philanthropy, Make-A-Wish, and the opportunity to meet a local family through that organization.

Suresh is also a member of the South Asian Student Association, which gave her the opportunity to perform at the campus-wide Diwali celebration in the fall.

"It was really cool to share a piece of my culture with campus," she said. "That was a really fun experience because a lot of my friends were there."

Suresh is heavily involved with the Noblitt Scholars Program, beginning last summer with the Outward Bound program, a weeklong outdoor excursion in Minnesota, where she met some of her closest friends. She has also taken advantage of several community service opportunities within the Noblitt Scholars Program, including volunteering at a STEM camp for local Girl Scouts, creating holiday cards for a children's hospital, and volunteering through Catholic Charities.

"Outward Bound taught me to be a leader even in uncomfortable and challenging situations," Suresh said. "Additionally, the Noblitt Scholars Program really encourages students to grow into well-rounded individuals, even encouraging study abroad and travel opportunities."

Suresh has already taken great care to become a well-rounded individual during her time at Rose-Hulman, developing skills and knowledge to benefit her throughout her major and her career.
