Tieken Promoted to Director of Career Services and Employer Relations
After serving students, alumni and corporate recruiters on an interim basis, Scott K. Tieken has been promoted to director of career services and employer relations. He begins this new leadership responsibilities July 1, 2019.
Tieken has been a member of Rose-Hulman’s career services operations for seven years and a staff employee within the institute since 2005. He was named an interim co-director of the Office of Career Services and Employer Relations in 2018.
Tieken has worked with students, alumni, employers, academic departments and the administration to implement successful programs that continue to provide Rose-Hulman graduates with employment and graduate school opportunities to meet their career aspirations. More than 91 percent of the institute’s Class of 2019 had secured employment, graduate school acceptances or military commissions by Commencement, with a record average accepted starting salary of $73,084 – nearly $5,000 more than last year’s amount.
Not resting on past achievements, Tieken and staff members have traveled to California, Washington, Oregon and Texas to expand full time, co-op and internship work opportunities in a variety of career fields. His office also implemented new software tools to link employers with students and alumni throughout the school year, while continuing to organize three career fairs and other campus-based corporate recruitment activities annually.
Erik Hayes, vice president for student affairs and dean of students, says, “Scott has worked with a strong team to help expand opportunities for our students and investigate new relationships for Rose-Hulman. We look forward to Scott entering this new chapter in his service to Rose-Hulman.”
Tieken joined the career services and employer relations team in 2012 as associate director after serving as associate director of admissions and coordinator of transfer students in the Office of Enrollment Management from 2005 until 2012.
Tieken earned a bachelor’s degree in public relations and advertising from the University of Southern Indiana and is currently studying for a master’s degree in student affairs and higher education management at ISU. He has been an admissions counselor at Indiana State University, a physician recruiter for a medical services group in Bloomington, Indiana, and a division manager for a major retail store’s corporate headquarters in Knoxville, Tennessee. He spent four years as an award-winning volunteer firefighter, certified rescue professional and hazardous materials specialist with the Owen Valley Volunteer Fire Department in Spencer, Indiana, ending his service in 2007.
Tieken is a member of the Association for Colleges and Universities, both at the national and Midwest levels, and the Career Development Professionals of Indiana.
He and his wife, Shannon, a laboratory technician in Rose-Hulman’s Department of Biology and Biomedical Engineering, are raising their family in Poland, Indiana, where he has been a leader and parent volunteer in the Clay County 4-H organization and president of the Poland Community Lions Club.
