Laptop Requirements

Rose‑Hulman requires all incoming freshmen to have a laptop - and we have since 1995 - so that you have the world at your fingertips, you can stay organized and you can work anywhere on campus.

Meet Your New Nearly Constant Companion—Your Laptop

We select a model each year so that everyone has the same laptop. Laptops must be paid for at the time the order is placed in June. If you indicate the payment is by loan, the loan must be secured and the laptop paid in full by freshman move-in day.

Our campus network includes 7,000 wired Ethernet ports and an extensive IEEE 802.11ac wireless network, which means you can work online nearly anywhere on campus. That includes all residence-hall rooms, snack bars, classrooms, labs and green spaces. The wired Ethernet infrastructure is a fully switched 1Gbps network with a 2Gbs connection to the Internet.

What do I get for my money when I buy the laptop bundle?

Here's what is included:

You get a portable computing system that will satisfy your basic computing needs during your undergraduate career at Rose-Hulman. The unit was selected to ensure that it will be compatible with the campus computing network, classroom equipment, program requirements and that it will be useful throughout your undergraduate studies at Rose-Hulman. The laptop you buy also entitles you to software that will be useful in courses throughout your undergraduate career.  Additionally, your laptop computer is covered by a 4-year manufacturer's warranty with Accidental Damage Protection. Rose-Hulman laptop technicians are certified by the computer manufacturer to provide warranty repairs on your laptop during the warranty period. This service is available to you while you are a student at Rose-Hulman. You may also use other certified warranty providers if you are away from the campus, including shipping it to the manufacturer.

How much money do I send with my laptop order?

If you are using the cash order form, you pay the total amount due, including 7% Indiana sales tax, by check or credit card. If you use the loan order form to finance your laptop, you only need to complete the form to initiate the application process for the laptop loan with the financial aid office. Do not send your first quarterly payment with your laptop order. Note that all students, regardless of their state of residence, are required to pay Indiana sales tax.

Can I use the required laptop and software throughout my undergraduate career at Rose-Hulman?

More about computer use:

The committee that selected the laptop computer and the software suite that is pre-loaded on it was careful to ensure that you can. While the rapid evolution of computer technology guarantees that more advanced units will be available before you graduate, your unit will be powerful enough for most of your classroom work throughout your career at Rose-Hulman. The available software will be usable in upper level as well as entry-level course work. Of course, just as upper level courses require different textbooks, you may need to buy additional software as you move through the curriculum.

What if I already have another model or brand of laptop computer?

Purchase requirements

You are required to purchase the laptop computer specified by the institute.  This is necessary to ensure that you have a computer that can be serviced by the institute, and is compatible with the campus network that delivers service to classrooms, laboratories and residence hall rooms. Other units may not satisfy these requirements. The required laptop computer gives you network capability and the ability to run the software that you will need in your academic classes. The large variety of laptops on the market makes it impossible for Rose-Hulman to provide maintenance service or assistance to you with a laptop other than the required model. For these reasons, other laptop computers will not satisfy the laptop computer requirement.

Does Rose-Hulman offer a financing program to help me pay for the required laptop package?

Financing your laptop

Yes! If you want to finance your laptop computer, use the Laptop Loan order form when ordering the Laptop Bundle online. The details of the Laptop Loan are provided in the Rose-Hulman Laptop Program Implementation and Policy Details document, available on My Rose-Hulman. Of course, if you wish, you may pay for your laptop computer up front and not participate in the Laptop Loan program.

Do I need a printer?

You need not own one since printers are located near classrooms, in residence halls, in the library and in computer labs. You may wish to buy a printer for your convenience; however, Rose-Hulman will not be responsible for it in any way.
