Q. What are Club Sports?
A. Club Sports provide opportunities for students, faculty, and staff with similar interests to participate in various sport and recreational activities. Club sports bridge the gap between intramurals and intercollegiate athletics by providing competition at specialized levels, participation in tournaments and opportunities to practice. Although some clubs remain solely recreational, most are competitive.
Student-initiated and student-managed, the basic structure of clubs allow members numerous opportunities for leadership and decision making. The actual success and strength of the club is dependent on effective leadership of the officers and the degree of involvement of its club members.
Q. How are Club Sports developed?
A. A sport club usually develops when several students express a desire to participate in a particular sport activity. These students should then contact Jordan Barrett for assistance and consultation to assure proper procedures are followed.
Q. Can a member of a sport club play on an intramural team and/or varsity team?
A. The Intramural Sports Program has restrictions regarding the use of sport club players participating in their related intramural sport. Varsity teams have their own restrictions regarding participation and those athletes should contact their coaches.
Q. How do I become a member?
A. Individual club sports establish membership requirements, dues, and club activities. All programs are available to students, faculty, and staff on the Rose-Hulman campus. Interested persons should contact the club’s president for specific membership information.
Q. Do I have to be an expert player to join a club?
A. No. Most clubs are open to all levels of competition/participation. Some clubs do have an “A” team and a “B” team, with the “A” team being the team that competes against other colleges/universities.
Q. Do I have to have my own equipment to join a club?
A. This depends on the club and you. Most clubs have the equipment needed to participate; some activities you will need to have your own equipment. Contacting the club president or visiting the club website is the best way to answer this question.
Q. What does it cost to join a club?
A. Participation in the program is free. However, individual clubs may charge membership dues, which varies. Depending on the club, you may also need to purchase your own jersey, equipment, etc.
Q. How are clubs funded?
A. Clubs are funded through the following means:
- Sport Club allocation from the Student Government Association
- Club dues or membership fees
- Some out-of-pocket expenses
- Club fundraiser projects
- Donations to club sports
Q. Do I have to travel with the club?
A. Some clubs do play other colleges/universities around the region and compete in national tournaments. The time commitment varies by club and travel is not mandatory, but those decisions are left to the club officers.
