Rose-Hulman Helping Provide STEM Education Tools as Project Lead The Way’s Affiliate Partner

Rose-Hulman is helping educate Midwest high school teachers to engage their students in open-ended problem solving, applying the engineering design process, and using industry-leading technology and software through Project Lead The Way (PLTW).

Seven teachers from four states have been on campus for a two-week workshop (July 21 to August 1) to learn how to integrate PLTW’s Introduction to Engineering Design course into their school’s freshman-year curriculum.

The course has students digging deep into the engineering design process, applying math, science, and engineering standards to hands-on projects. Students work individually and in teams to design solutions to a variety of problems using 3D modeling software, and document their work in an engineering notebook.

“The Project Lead The Way curriculum is giving high school students valuable tools to learn about different engineering disciplines before beginning post-secondary education or careers,” says Rose-Hulman PLTW Affiliate Director Christine Buckley, associate professor of biology and biomedical engineering.

This summer’s workshop is being led by Michael Winderl, a PLTW-certified master teacher.

Teachers participating in the workshop are Jacob Berg of Forest Park High School in Ferdinand, Indiana; Jason Berg of Glenbrook North High School in Northbrook, Illinois; Collin Daunhauer of Jasper High School in Jasper, Indiana; Rick Foster of Danville Community High School in Danville, Indiana; Jason Hayes of Elizabethtown High School in Elizabethtown, Kentucky; Scot Hollenbaugh of Oregon Davis High School in Hamlet, Indiana; and Donald Murphy of Kiamichi Technology Centers in Hugo, Oklahoma.

Rose-Hulman is an affiliate partner for PLTW, supporting the growth in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programs for students in kindergarten through 12th grade (K-12) across Indiana. The institute is among approximately 50 other colleges, universities, and research institutions providing support for PLTW and its network of nearly 5,200 elementary, middle, and high schools across the United States.

Rose-Hulman has a rich history in providing innovative STEM education programs. Teachers and students in Indiana often turn to the institute as an important STEM education resource. Rose-Hulman’s Portal Resource for Indiana Science and Mathematics (PRISM) is an online community for middle- and high-school teachers, and the institute’s Homework Hotline receives nearly 40,000 calls annually from students seeking assistance with K-12 mathematics and science homework.
