TEAMS helps develop “STEM-capable” students that can problem solve real, every-day challenges. This year’s theme was “Engineering a Secure Cyberspace.” Teams with eight students worked together to answer 80 problems within 90 minutes.

“This competition helps students discover their potential for engineering,” stated Wabash Valley TEAMS Director Dale Long. He pointed out that the annual challenge theme is selected from the National Academy of Engineering’s Grand Challenges for Engineering.

Terre Haute South captured top honors among teams in the varsity (11/12 grades) and junior varsity (9/10 grades) competitions. The junior varsity B team posted a near-perfect 73 score, while the varsity A team correctly answered 70 problems. Both teams will advance for statewide honors in the large-school enrollment division (276-375 seniors).

Meanwhile, Northview’s two varsity teams had scores separated by just one point -- the A team got 53 correct answers and the B team had a 52-point score.  The A team took regional honors in the enrollment division for schools with 76 to 275 seniors.

Varsity teams from North Central and Vincennes Rivet tied for first place in the small-school division (4-75 seniors) with 52-point scores.

All teams are now eligible for state recognition later this month.

Members of Terre Haute South’s varsity champions were seniors Alex Barksdale, Deborah Lee, Kyle Mullins, Sagar Patel, Henry Stadler, and Jay Trivedi, along with juniors Ryan Chung and Krishan Kumar. The top-scoring junior varsity team had sophomores Kush Patel and Takoda Sons, and freshmen Kevin Cao, Rita Cui, Jon Ji, Sabin Karki, Christopher Ray, and Luke Yeagley. Both teams were coached by former chemistry teacher Daniel Wunderlich.
