Mechanical engineering alumnus Scott M. Simmonds has been recognized as a “rising star” in the area of intellectual property and business/corporate law in this year’s Indiana Super Lawyers 2014. The listing will appear in the March issue of Indiana Super Lawyers magazine.

Simmonds is a partner in Barnes & Thornburg LLP’s Indianapolis office. He is a member of the firm's intellectual property department, focusing his practice on preparing and prosecuting patent application through the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and counseling clients on the protection of intellectual property.

Indiana Super Lawyers were selected through a peer-review survey sent to attorneys, who were asked to nominate the best attorneys they personally observed in action. The top point-getters, comprising not more than five percent of licensed attorneys in the state, were selected as Super Lawyers.

Prior to joining Barnes & Thornburg, Simmonds spent 13 years as an engineer working in the design and manufacture of medical devices and patient handling equipment. He has an array of experience addressing intellectual property issues over a broad range of technologies including active wound therapy devices, fiber-reinforced composite structures, digital image signal processing, and various electro-mechanical devices.

Simmonds, a 1991 Rose-Hulman alumnus, received a law degree from Indiana University School of Law in 2004. He is a member of the corporate IP management standing committee of the Intellectual Property Owners Association and the executive committee of the IP Section of the Indianapolis Bar Association.

Simmonds is admitted to practice law in Indiana and before the U.S. district courts for both the northern and southern districts of Indiana. He is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and is a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association.

With more than 600 attorneys and other legal professionals, Barnes & Thornburg LLP is one of the 100 largest law firms in the country. The firm serves clients worldwide from its offices in Atlanta, Chicago, Delaware, Indiana, Los Angeles, Michigan, Minneapolis, Ohio, and Washington, D.C.
