This workbench base is made from maple. It is patterned after the Frank Klausz bench which is written up in FWW issue 53 and in Scott Landis' book on The Workbench Book: A Craftsman's Guide to Workbenches for Every Type of Woodworking. The only difference is that mine is a foot longer and a couple of inches wider. I also beefed up the railings a bit and used bigger bolts. It is finished with Watco Polyurethane. You may notice that I began work on the top. It will consist of three 10" side planks or Mahogany. Right now, I am handplaning one side flat. The boards are too big and unwieldy for my power jointer. Once one side is flat, I will be able to use my heavy-duty power planer on the other side.
