Travel Book Case

I love to read physical books and I read a lot. Hotel rooms have big screen TVs for which I do not have any use, but no libraries in the rooms. To make my stays from home more, well, homey, I built this travelling library. At ?x?x? it is sufficiently small to count as a personal item for airplane travel, yet, it holds sufficient printed reading materials to last for several weeks. Originally, I was going to build a Jefferson writing desk, but, I really do not have a use for it. The travel book case seemed to be the next best thing.

I built the entire box and then sawed it in half on my bandsae. The case is made from Mahogany, finished with four coats of Waterlox Original Sealer/Finish and the inside is lined with dark green felt. I added rubber elastic in the center to keep the books from falling out. The case has a neat, three-sided key for the locking mechanism and I attached the hinges to the flat side, with bolts through the side walls. The hinges are antique, victorian cast steel; I modified them a little bit by cutting off the ornate hinge housing and making new hinge pins.
