Table-top Bookcase

I made this bookcase for my 5.5 year old son. He gave me a drawing of a bookcase to house his collection of Little blue truck books. I was intrigued by the design; it looks very modern to me. To ensure I understood his design, I drew a perspective drawing of what I thought he wanted. The photo above shows what I ended up building, with some help by my son.

The bookcase is made from hard maple and walnut; primarily because the client had a very tight deadline and I that lumber on hand. The base, though, is special; it started out as an 8/4 piece of walnut, a cut-off from the lumber for the posts of the poster bed, something I have been saving for a special occasion. Well, this was it and it adds a lot of intensity to the piece. The case is finished in three coats of the polyurethane/linseed oil/tung oil mixture followed by two coats of the linseed oil/tung oil/beeswax mixture as describe by Sam Maloof in Sam Maloof, Woodworker.
