I made the lamp base from a few cut-offs of Walnut. My wife suggested to make the lamp base so that it contrasts with many of rectangular furniture we have in our bedroom, hence the turned round base. It is finished in two coats of a poly-tungoil-linseed oil finish and three coats of a tungoil-linseed oil-wax finish. Both recipes are from Sam Maloof.
