Rocket Table

I call this piece a rocket table. It is inspired by Shaker stands. I enjoy Shaker furniture and one day when I looked at photos of Shaker stands, I must have squinted my eyes just enough to perceive a rocket. Sure, the post of a Shaker stand looks like a bottle and their legs are kind of spindly. But, beef up the legs and change the design of the center post a bit and you have a rocket inspired stand.

A key challenge to the design was how to attach the top. I thought about this for quite some time and eventually decided to let the top represent the clouds, being pierced by the rocket.

A rocket table wouldn't be complete without some indication of the rocket being in motion. As such, I built a rocket motor shield from sheet metal and nailed it in place. It hides the small MAGLITE flash light that I inserted into a half inch hole that I drilled into the bottom of the post. In all the photos, you see the light emitted by the flash light.

The stand is made from mahogany and finished with four coats of Waterlox Sealer and Finish, followed by an application of wax.
