Homework 1

Problem 1

A fluid machine that can be either a pump or a turbine operates between two reservoirs at the elevations shown in the figure. The total head loss experienced by the system for flow in either direction is 17 ft and the volumetric flow rate of the water through the pipe is 15,000 gal/min

  1. If the machine is a turbine, find the power produced (in HP).
  2. If the machine is a pump, find the power required (in HP).

Problem 2

Five gpm of methyl alcohol flows through a 2 nominal, schedule 40 steel pipe. Find the Reynolds number and determine whether the flow is laminar or turbulent.

Problem 3

A pump moves 0.4 ft3/s of light oil through a 2-in. ID, cast-iron line 500 ft long as shown in the figure. Determine the pumping power required.

Problem 4

What power would be required if the oil were heated such that μ = 1.6 x 10-3 lbm/ft-s?

Problem 5

In Problem 3, what would the flow rate be if the pump delivered 5 hp to the fluid?
