-
JDK 6.0 Update 12 — The J2SE Development Kit (JDK) supports creating J2SE applications

Installing JDK 6
Do the following when you are on campus – it is too slow otherwise
(they require downloading files of about 75 MB and 60 MB).
-
Login to an
Administrator
account (e.g.,
localmgr)
- Open
Start → Control Panel → Add or Remove Programs
and uninstall all your existing versions of Java prior to Version 6, Update 12.
-
They may be listed as something like either or both of the following —
if the update is less than 12, delete it!
- Java(TM) 6 Update 11
- Java(TM) SE Development Kit 6 Update 6
-
Manually delete all folders whose names begin either jdk
or jre beneath
C:\Program Files\Java
-
Click
this link to the installer for J2SE 6.0 Update 12
and select
Run.
- If you are running 64-bit Windows
(if you are not sure, then you are NOT running 64-bit Windows!),
use
this link instead.
-
Follow the instructions for installation,
accepting all defaults
-
Especially: install the software to the
default folder
-
This installation installs both the JDK and JRE
-
Restart your computer if directed to do so.
-
Open this
link to the local zip archive for the JDK Documentation
and extract the contents to
C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_12
.
- Note that you extract to jdk
and NOT jre.
- When you are done, confirm that you have a folder called
C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_12\docs
that has many folders directly beneath it —
make sure that you don't have docs below docs.
- Extracting this big file may take 5 to 15 minutes on your computer.
- Sanity check: Check that you have the following:
- Beneath C:\Program Files\Java\
— just jdk-1.6.0_12
and jre6 (and nothing else)
- Beneath C:\Program Files\Java\jdk-1.6.0_12\
— several folders and files,
including docs
- Beneath C:\Program Files\Java\jdk-1.6.0_12\docs\
— several folders and files
If you have trouble with any of the above, get help from a lab assistant in the CSSE lab (Moench Hall, F-217)
during assistant office hours.
