How this online course will work — FAQ

  1. Is there a video explaining how this online course will work?
Yes. See the first video listed at Session 1 preparation.
  2. What do the Days and Dates on the home page mean?
This course has 30 sessions, organized into 3 sessions a week, just as does the regular (non-online) course. The home page at http://www.rose-hulman.edu/class/csse/csse120/201440 maintains that organization. However:
    • The specific days and dates are meaningless. They are there just to help you see the approximate pace at which you should proceed.
    • You must do the sessions in the order listed — Session 1, then Session 2, etc. For each session, you do the linked preparation BEFORE that session.
      • In particular, the tests are just "sessions" like any other.
    • The actual meeting times for sessions will be determined via a Piazza question. You can attend (electronically) ANY of the actual meeting times. See your email for a list of those times.
    • You should normally do 3 sessions each week and should follow the schedule for the most part. However, in the first 7 weeks of the course, you can fall behind by as much as 4 sessions without harm.
      • But be sure that you are caught up by August 8.
    • We will talk about the details of the timing for the project and Test 4 later in the term. But note that you will do the tail end of this course after you return to Rose-Hulman.
  3. How will you (the instructor) know that I (the student) am attending a session?
When you are ready to begin a class session, use Microsoft Lync to Instant Message (IM) me.
    • Just say Hi or something.
    • I will respond to let you know that I am online and listening.
    • If I do not reply within 5 minutes or so, something has gone wrong. You can try to email or call me in that case.
  4. How do I ask questions during a class session?
Use Microsoft Lync to Instant Message (IM) me. If you prefer, you can try calling me, but I can (in theory) handle multiple IM's but only one phone call at a time.
  5. How do I ask show you my screen?
In a Microsoft Lync IM, [details to be supplied at a later date].
