The second hour was looking over the botball website, and then a group meeting where we did our group homework that was assigned today."	"During our meeting, we had a few questions about what exactly we were supposed to produce. We think that we will get the answer in class tomorrow and Thursday, espechially after we have a little more knowlege about the robots, and about the software we will be using."

"I thought the chat room meeting was a really great idea. We managed to get alot of work done from the convenience of our own rooms. Occasionally there were long silent pauses and some delayed responses, but in general it was a really nice breath of fresh air to have a chatroom meeting."

Two groups decided to work on the team-building exercises, and another person offered to work on the third task. Writing-up the team-building exercise was pretty straight-forward. Since it was my idea I explained it to Zach and we discussed some details. Then wrote it down. I hope the team continues to show such a good working morale."

"Outside of class I went on to the botball website and checked it out. I also learned more about beyond botball and the parts and legos that could be used for both botball and beyond botball. I also chatted with the team about the assignments, our groups of students, and other minor things."

I also spent time reading about "Beyond Botball""	"My teammate and I found it somewhat difficult to share ideas initially because we had never met each other before. We were basically bouncing ideas off each other for the teamwork building exercise that we were detailing and we simply had to agree on the specifics of the exercise. We just got over the unfamiliarity and worked on it."

"- I didn't encounter any problems in what I did today. - I can tell I was sucessful because I got everything done that I decided to do. - We used e-mail to exchange our AIM names. - In class I learned that we would actually get to design our own robots as well as help the other teams with their project. I thought this made the course much more interesting. - I just realized that everyone doing the normal team building exercises thinks that they're really stupid and worthless. But that means that everyone is thinking similar thoughts; therefore, they can bond more easily. So team building exercises do work, just not in the way I originally thought they were supposed to work."

Wrote up out of class two of the team building ideas and ideas on familierixing eachother with botball equipment."	"We completed the assigned work on simple with out a whole lot of creativety and have begun getting to know eachother and our background."

I also spent time reading through the botball rules and the beyond botball flyer."	"For the inclass portion, the problems I encountered were not having a group and trying to find one, and not knowing people in the class that well. I thought my team did a fairly good job of at least trying to get to know each other a little bit, and figuring out kind of where we stood in terms of skills and attitudes. We divided up the homework due on Tuesday. "

Later in the evening our group got together via AIM chat to discuss the teamwork assigment which we spent about an hour and a half discussing and drafting paragraphs. Afterwards, I spent about a half-hour browsing the botball.org site and reading the rules and information about Beyond Botball."	"To do the assignments, we used an online chat service which is less than ideal but most convienant. Given the level of interaction required for the assignment, this method of group communication is probably adequate since we are all comfortable using a chatroom. However, such a system could easily be difficult to be productive with and perhaps some other means of communication would be better suited to less computer adept people. Given the lack of locality to each other, giving feedback about each others work is difficult to do while it is being worked on. Clearly there is no substitute for actually getting together, even if only for less time. There is plenty of reason to believe that we would be more productive if we were isolated from using a computer."

"The hardest part for today was figuring out the team dynamics. That is, trying to get to know the teammates that I hadn't worked with previously; I needed to assess how they could best contribute and what their strengths and weaknesses are. When we met in the Worx to finish our homework assignment it took a little while to get started and organized, but I helped by directing the flow of the meeting so we didn't get too out of hand. My feelings about the course so far are that it will be unlike any course I've taken at Rose. It should prove to be interesting and rewarding!"

Outside of class I wrote up the team building activity I thought up in class and e-mailed it to one of my teammates to put with our other idea. I also read the general information about botball beyond and the rules."	"I didn't really have any problems but I did learn what we are going to be doing for the rest of the year."

Our team meeting was admittedly pretty inefficient, too - we met online rather than in person and I think we could've done it a good deal faster. Curt ran the online meeting, Mike was absent. We generally divided up the work & proofread the result. I learned it's a good idea to check ahead to see what a good meeting time is, because one team member was asleep when the meeting started."

"I got to meet a few new people that I had never met before, and got to learn their names. They seem like good people to work with. They're pretty shy at the moment, and don't like to talk much. This is okay for now, but I hope they are a little more outgoing later when we have to deal with our bot-ball teams."

I also like how it's a "service project" too, because service projects are hard to come by at Rose."
"0F5A65D5FA38439AA61D797FE8CC0068"	"Meyer, D. Christopher"	"meyerdc"	"3/7/2006 4:45:48 PM"	"1.5 hours"	"I went to lecture and there the team brainstormed ideas for initiating teamwork. One of my ideas was chosen so I spent time Monday evening writing a more detailed description of "Minefield Maze" up for the homework."	"The brainstorming technique using Post-It notes was quite similar to the method taught in ECE 361. After all of us came up with a couple ideas the team narrowed down the methods of introducing teamwork to two ideas, one of which was mine. This method of categorizing and eliminating worked with our robots in 361 and seemed to work here, too. The team then split up the homework. Kimbrell and I work a more detailed explanation of our ideas while another member wrote up the idea that we discussed about introducing botball to the students. This method seemed to be less time intensive method compared to meeting outside of class and compiling ideas, but it may have not allowed us to come up with better ideas or improve upon our current one."

This meeting lasted until 7:45. I started preparing for this meeting at 6:45."	"Our meeting this evening was very productive. All members of the group had read/though about what had to get done, so it was a matter of discussing and merging our ideas into the document we created for submission tomorrow. It was a great meeting that took very little time beacause we stayed on task and worked efficiently."

Read the botball sight for about thirty minutes and spend thirty minutes at a group meeting to finish the homework for tonight."	"We used the group discussion method, with each member bringing any good points into the discussion as they think of them."
"5D8E294B07544714A0DBC5D414CD15F3"	"Nicklyn, Nicholas"	"nicklynj"	"3/7/2006 6:51:27 PM"	"2 hours"	"learned what bot ball was, the general outline for the course, who my team will be, a good team-building exercise"	"we were very pressed in the amount of time we had to decide when and where to further organize our group and complete our assigned project, we were able to decide to all meet back at the WORX at 5:30 in the evening and we all followed through on that commitment. I learned that the course will be generally about just participation and trying hard at it, not necessarily about how good you happen to do but how much effort you put forth. Our team was well organized I believe, we were able to communicate fine and still were able to have a good time yet accomplish our objective in under an hour while having a few laughs while doing so."

The homework was very straightforward and we had no difficulties with that, and learned a little more about each other as we made suggestions on how to expand upon the two ideas we selected in class."

"For the first homework assignment, my group distributed the work amongst group members, and then wrote down contact information and gave it to one member who then redistributed it to all of us through an e-mail. When everyone had completed their assigned tasks they sent their work in to one group member who then assembled the various paragraphs into a single document, and sent it back out to everyone for review. There were no problems encountered with this method. There was no direct feedback on the work I did today, but there will be feedback later in the form of a grade for the assignment."

After class I sent out an email to each of the other classmates to help to introduce each other and establish a communication channel. I then looked over www.botball.com. Later in the evening I gathered all the info from the teammates and organized HW#1 into one document."	"Once I left class I attempted to contact each of the other team members. This is when I realized I couldnt read the team members writing. I tried to search for their emails on the Rose-Hulman website but ended up going back to the professors office for their complete names. I do feel that I was successful setting up a good communication with the team. Every member now has every other members email address, skype account, and aim account. Our team did a good job about getting the right information sent around and on time. Im sure that in the future we will begin to work even more fluently at a team. "

"	"P: I forgot the URL for beyond botball S: I looked around and searched google. I know more than I did before, but I havent really been tested. During class we each talked and contributed ideas. As for lessons, I should probably write down stuff (e.g. urls) from class. "

"Today was really an administrative day. I learned all the requirement for our first project, which allowed me to really consider possible applications. I also learned all the requirements for this class. During class our group was very effective in combining ideas to find two team building activities. We did encounter a small problem, which is not everyone could read everyone else's handwriting, but that was a problem solved by discussion. Our group decided on the two we would use simply by each of us voting by putting a mark on the two Post-It notes that we liked most. Reading about the teams led me to one dissapointment. I was hoping to work with mostly rookie teams or teams with less experience, however, we have one group with 4 years experience. The thing I think our group really took away from today was the method of brainstorming, which was very effective."

Looked at the botball website and tried to understand the rules and regulations as to what we can and cannot do... (I have NEVER worked with legos or these sort of robotics kits to a great extent. Definately looking forward to leading these groups and making my own) Came up with a few ideas to try out the lego mechanics and see if it can be easily picked up."	"Unfortunately with multiple people with brand new schedules and every class wanting to meet at the same time, it forced us to seperate out the work individually to work on alone and then piece all back together when class resumes on Tuesday. While this is not very "team oriented", it's the necessary evil to get the immediate work done. Alot of great ideas where passed around and ideas are flowing. I know at least a few of us are excited that this may not only be a relatively easy course in comparison to PLC or 230, but also an entertain and fun course that I could easily spend hours upon hours outside of class working on. Robotics has always been a fascination of mine, but I have never really been given a chance to explore it much. However, I would like to mention that I had no idea what I was getting into when I signed up for this class. It was like that special surprise that I will greatly enjoy. A little chaotic and sluggish at first, but once everyone understands what they are doing and how to have a little fun, it will go along smoothly."

Once I had read up on the beyond botball tournament I decided we should get the team together to talk about some possible strategies."	"The explanation for the beyond botball rules is exactly written but terribly difficult to understand. We should probably build a competiton area for our team sometime soon. We didn't really organize the team work. We delegated to different members in order to avoid the logistics. The team dynamic is going to be really akward at first. I'm probably the only guy on the team that knows everyone, and thats just that I know of everyone. I only ever really hang out with Jason, Zach and Erik. We'll see how it pans out in the next week though."

"I was tired, so I took a nap sometime in the evening. When I woke, I found out that our group had met via an AIM chatroom while I was sleeping and completed the first homework assignment. Boy was my face red. =( I suppose next time I'll find out when the meetings are scheduled so that I can plan accordingly and something like this doesn't happen again."
