Homework Assignments PH 327 Spring 2014
For first day of class:Read
parts
of Chapter 1 enough to bring to class Schroeder's
definitions of a) temperature,
b) heat, and c) work.
The 'expiration' date of an
assignment is two days after the due date.
Set 1. Due Friday March 14, 2014
- 1.3, 1.4 p. 5
- 1.6, p. 6; 1.11 p. 8
- 1.7 a) p. 6
- 1.15, p. 8. a) Find the density of air in Albuquerque at 40 F
(dawn) and 55 F (late morning). b) Take the balloon diameter to be 60
ft. (Balloons like those in Fig. 1 are launched during the Balloon
Festival in Albuquerque, NM in October each year.)
- For temperatures of
40 F and 55 F,. find the mass of air inside the balloon when hovering.
c) Find the average air temperature
inside the balloon with outside air is 40 F (dawn), at 55 F (late
morning).
Set 2. Due
Friday March 21, 2014
- Prob 1.16, p. 8
- Prob 1.17 a) and b) p. 9
- Prob 1.17 c) and d), p. 9
- 1.18, 1.19 p. 13
- Use data on pp 404,5 to out how many mols of propane must be
burned to raise the
air temperature inside the balloon from 310 K to 320 K, including the
air which would leave during the heating (assume all the air stays
inside during heating). Write out the stoichiometry, and show the
details of the calculation. Look-up of propane combustion will not do.
Same balloon as earlier, 60 ft diameter.
Set 3. Due
Friday March 28, 2014
- Prob. 1.28, Prob 1.29 p. 20.
- Calculate the heat flow through the walls and ceiling of the SRC
for 20 degrees F temperature difference. Take the building to be 27'
high and 314' x 208' in footprint. Ignore heat flow through the floor,
take 20% window area, 80% other area, R-2 for windows, R-10 for walls,
etc. First find the heat flow in BTU/hr, then watts. Determine the
heating cost per day, at 10 cents per kwh.
- Prob 1.22 a) through e), p. 14
- In a diesel engine, air is compressed quickly to 1/25 of its
original volume. Determine the final air temperature, ignoring the
small amout of injected diesel fuel present. Why doesn't a diesel
engine need spark plugs?
- Prob 1.62, p. 40. You must make a sketch, showing a boundary at x
and another at x+dx, across which heat flows.
- Problem 2.10, p. 60. Let solid A have 200 oscillators and B have
150 oscillators, and the two share 80 energy units. Use (COMBIN
function in Excel)
Set 4. Due
