PH 314 Course Philosophy
- Develop facility with analytical techniques (by hand) and also with
Maple
- Insist that students be able to function by hand, and also using Maple.
- Have students work out as much as possible, rather than having them
watch the instructor do it all
- Provide the general framework, but make sure students put things together
for themselves
- First have individual students think about how to tackle a problem
- Then have students exchange ideas with neighbors
- Have students work things out in loose collaboration
- Discussion among students is desirable, especially about homework assignments.
It is ok to exchange ideas, and even to look at someone else's homework
solution.
- It is perfectly OK to work out your solution after seeing someone else's,
but it is absolutely not OK to copy
someone else's solution. (You must work out your solution after having
returned the other solution, and you are no longer looking at it).
- It is never ok to give your solution to someone else for more than
a few minutes. [It's never ok to 'lend' anyone an
electronic copy of your work.]
Course Format
Three 'lectures' and one 2-hour 'Maple lab / problem session'. [I hope
to arrange the 2-hour session after obtaining your schedules.]
