Homework Assignments

• Homework 1 (due Friday 3/14/14): Read sections 1.1 and 1.2. Do and turn in
  • Section 1.1: Problems 2, 6(a,e,f) (use Gaussian elimination with backsubstitution), 9.
  • Section 1.2: Problems 2, 5(a,e,f) (use Gaussian elimination with backsubstitution), 7, 16.

• Homework 2 (due Thursday 3/20/14): Read sections 1.3 through 1.6. Concentrate on the basic math in 1.3 and 1.4, but skim the applications for fun---we'll come back to some of these later. Do
  • Section 1.3: Problems 1 to 11 odd.
  • Section 1.4: Problems 1, 5, 10, 21, 30.
  • Section 1.5: Problems 2, 7, 15, 18, 22.
  • Section 1.6: Problems 1, 2, 3, 4.
  Turn in ONLY the section 1.4 and 1.5 problems.

• Homework 3 (due Friday 3/28/14): Skim section 2.1, worrying mainly about the 2X2 or 3X3 matrix case. Read sections 3.1 through 3.4. Do
  • Section 2.1: Nothing to turn in here. Just make up a few small square matrices, say in the 2 by 2 to 3 by 3 range. Use Maple to compute the determinant, then use Maple to perform Gaussian elimination on the matrix and verify that the determinant is in fact the product of the diagonal elements in the echelon form (if you don't rescale the pivots to 1). Know how to compute a 2X2 determinant by hand, nothing larger.
  • Section 3.1: Problems 3, 9, 12.
  • Section 3.2: Problems 2, 8, 18, 22.
  • Section 3.3: Problems 2(a,b), 6, 14.
  • Section 3.4: Problems 5, 10, 17.
  Turn in only the problems from Chapter 3.

• Homework 4 (due Friday 4/4/14): Read sections 3.5 and 3.6. Do and turn in
  • Section 3.5: Problem 5.
  • Section 3.6: Problems 1(a,b), 8, 19, 24. On number 1, use Maple for Gaussian elimination, but don't just type "nullspace(A)" or such nonsense.

• Homework 5 (due Friday 4/18/14): Read sections 5.1 through 5.4. Do and turn in
  • Section 5.1: Problems 13, 14.
  • Section 5.2: Problems 5, 13.
  • Section 5.3: Problems 1(c), 9, 11.
  • Section 5.4: Problems 7, 13, 16, 33.

• Homework 6 (due Monday 5/5/14): Read sections 5.5 and 5.6, and the handout on ``complex inner product spaces.'' Do and turn in
  • Section 5.5: Problems 7, 14, 16, 27, 35.
  • Section 5.6: Problems 4, 5, 12.

• Homework 7 (due Thursay 5/15/14): Read sections 6.1 and 6.3. Do and turn in
  • Section 6.1: Problems 3, 8, 18, 22, 31.
  • Section 6.3: Problems 10, 14, 19, 32.
