Homecoming Celebrates Past, Present and Future
September 23, 2016
A Winning Spirit: Former coach and athletic director John Mutchner will be recognized during Homecoming by having his name enshrined on the basketball court of the Sports and Recreation Center’s Hulbert Arena. The dedication event is planned on September 30, starting at 8:30 p.m.
Homecoming is a time to recall the past, celebrate the present, and look forward to the future. That’s what Rose-Hulman alumni, current students, and special friends will do while participating in several activities from Friday, September 30, through Sunday, October 2. (See schedule highlights following story)
One of this year’s special Homecoming events will be dedication of the Sports and Recreation Center’s basketball court in honor of legendary basketball coach John Mutchner. The dedication will be during Friday’s pep rally, starting at 8:30 p.m., in Hulbert Arena.
Mutchner-coached teams won 341 games over 25 seasons, including four appearances in the NCAA Division III tournament. From the 1975-76 to 1977-78 seasons, the Engineers posted a 63-23 record and won three conference championships, with the 1976-77 team advancing to the quarterfinal round of the Division III tournament.
Besides success on the court, Mutchner brought excitement to Shook Fieldhouse by bringing an atmosphere featuring cannon blasts, a variety of sirens, and a “Give ‘em Hell Rose” banner unfurling above center court during pre-game festivities. Mutchner also organized several memorable overseas trips, including making Rose-Hulman the first U.S. college basketball team to play in Russia.
“John made the game fun and, most importantly, he let us showcase our many talents. He was a ‘player’s coach’ and a father figure to many of his players,” says Board of Trustees Chair Don Ings (ME, 1970), the basketball program’s all-time leading scorer.
Following the dedication of the basketball court and pep rally on Friday night, the traditional lighting of the Homecoming bonfire, designed and constructed by students, will take place.
The Alumni Association will recognize six alumni during the Alumni Awards Breakfast on Saturday, October 1. Receiving the Honor Alumni Award will be Bill Grube (CHE, 1970), Gregg Lowe (EE, 1984), and Jeff Papa (ECON, 1993), while the Distinguished Young Alumni Award will be presented to Ben Cook (EE, 2010), Keenan Long (ME, 2010), and Mike Reeves (CE, 2006). Biology professor Ella Ingram and Rose-Hulman Ventures Project Manager Rob Davignon will be bestowed honorary alumni status.
