As Spring Career Fair Approaches, More Than 70% of 2016 Seniors Already Have Job, Grad School Plans

Students In Demand: Employers from throughout the country have attended the fall and winter career fairs to seek students for full time, internship, and co-op positions. The last career fair of this school year will be April 20 on campus.
Nearly three quarters of Rose-Hulman’s 2016 senior class members began their final spring academic term having already accepted post-graduate employment opportunities, are deciding on job offers, or plan to attend graduate school after receiving their diplomas this May.
The Office of Career Services reports that slightly more than 70 percent of this year’s graduates have accepted job offers, are deciding on offers, have already been accepted to graduate school, or are still planning to attend graduate school.
“We entered March being right on schedule with past years, even with this being our largest graduating class in history (538 seniors),” says Kevin Hewerdine, director of career services and employer relations. “Employers in several sectors of the economy are doing well and extended job offers early in the school year, if not as early as the end of last summer. Now, other employers have finalized their employment plans and are seeking to fill their needs.”
The National Association of Colleges and Employers’ (NACE) Job Outlook 2016 survey reported that employers plan to hire 11 percent more new college graduates for their U.S. operations from the Class of 2016 than they did from the previous year’s class. The perception of the job market among employers is also climbing, with 42 percent of employers participating in the NACE survey characterizing the job market for Class of 2016 graduates as “very good” or “excellent.” Just two years ago, only 18 percent of responding employers had the same view of the job market for Class of 2014 graduates.
More than 70 companies are expected to participate in the Spring Career Fair on April 20 (11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Sports and Recreation Center’s fieldhouse area). This will be the third career fair hosted this academic year by Rose-Hulman to provide opportunities for students to obtain full time, internship, and co-op work experiences. A total of 394 companies attended the fall and winter job fairs.
Members of Rose-Hulman’s Class of 2016 majoring in computer science, electrical engineering, software engineering, and computer engineering are having the most success in the job market. Mechanical engineering and civil engineering also are having strong years so far.
“With few exceptions, STEM careers are still hot right now and should be for many years to come,” remarks Hewerdine.
Starting salaries for these STEM majors are strong as well. The current average job offer for Rose-Hulman’s Class of 2016 is $70,432, with several computer science majors earning as high as $88,900, according to the Office of Career Services.

The Princeton Review cited Rose-Hulman for providing exceptional internship (No. 3 nationally) and career placement opportunities (No. 5). These factors make the institute an outstanding return on investment (ROI) and a listing in the 2016 book Colleges That Pay You Back: The 200 Schools That Give You the Best Bang for Your Tuition Buck. The career information section of The Princeton Review’s Rose-Hulman profile lists an ROI rating score of 93 (out of 100). It also cites PayScale.com figures reporting that Rose-Hulman’s graduates with at least a bachelor's degree have a median starting salary of $67,300 and median mid-career salary of $115,700.
