Diversity Director Brings Wealth of Diversity, Inclusiveness Experiences
December 10, 2015
Rose-Hulman has taken another step forward in diversity and inclusiveness by appointing Janice Fenn as the first full-time director for its nascent Center for Diversity.
Fenn has more than 25 years of experience in implementing diversity programs for employee development with such companies as Kraft Foods, Sara Lee Corporation, and Quaker Oats Company. She designed and launched diversity and inclusion tools, including “The Development Ladder Game,” “Reel-Time Scenarios,” and “Diversity Fairy Tales for Business Professionals.”
Fenn also was co-author of “Do You See What I See-A Diversity Tale for Retaining People of Color.”
“Janice Fenn combines a wealth of experience with valuable organizational and community skills to work with our Diversity Council in the development of a diversity plan that shapes, defines, and embraces the institute’s vision of diversity, and provide active support for achieving that vision,” says Rose-Hulman President Jim Conwell. “She also will provide guidance to the Office of Human Resources as our resident authority on diversity in hiring practices and diversity training.”
At Rose-Hulman, Fenn will help establish education goals and programs that develop and sustain an environment of inclusion and support for students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds. She also will develop programs and training that promotes cultural change in the area of diversity within the institute, and will serve as a primary resource toward achieving Rose-Hulman’s goals for inclusion and respect for all individuals, regardless of background.
Fenn also will implement on-campus training programs, support the various student groups and services that have focus and impact on diversity, and work with the Office of Human Resources to develop a “best in class” recruitment program of talented individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Fenn joins Rose-Hulman on January 4 after serving as a diversity practice leader for The Professional Resources Organization in Lisle, Illinois since 2006. She has led diversity initiatives and advised chief executive officers on inclusion at companies that include American Express, DuPont, ING, Time Warner, ConAgra, American Cancer Society, Grainger, and Northwestern Mutual. She also designed and launched strategic frameworks for retention, employee development, mentoring, and employee resource groups.
Since 2012, Fenn has also been an adjunct professor at Benedictine University, teaching online courses in the Master’s of Leadership Program on diversity and inclusion, servant leadership, mentoring, and networking for leaders.
Fenn has been recognized by the NAACP, YMCA, United Negro College Fund, and Walmart for her for contributions to diversity and inclusion. She earned a master’s degree in management, with a concentration in human resources, from Purdue University’s Krannert Graduate School of Management. She also is a graduate of Leadership America’s Executive Development Program and earned certifications in leadership excellence and people management from the Disney Institute. She originally earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in biology from Tuskegee Institute.
